Job Description:
The Editor-in-Chief of Science of Mind Publishing is responsible for all aspects of the editorial content of Science of Mind magazine and Science of Mind Publishing. Maintains the quality of all publishing products, being mindful of the magazine’s mission to educate readers in Science of Mind principles in a variety of engaging ways. The Editor-in-Chief provides the magazine’s direction as a thought-provoking, comforting and inspirational tool that addresses both timeless spiritual questions and issues of contemporary life that face its audience. A key responsibility is to ensure that readers are provided with a product that they can relate to, containing a balance of time-tested elements and forward-looking contributions discussing all aspects of New Thought spirituality. The content of the magazine and books must be in alignment with Science of Mind principles and the goal of the Global Heart Vision.
The Editor-in-Chief is also responsible for overseeing the day-to-day business of the magazine. Working with the Publishing Business Manager, the publisher, and consultants, the Editor is responsible for setting and maintaining the magazine’s budget and communicating with vendors. The Editor-in-Chief will manage the launch of several new revenue-generating ventures, including a large print edition, a new online magazine, e-newsletters, and a new book publishing program. The Editor-in-Chief serves on the management team for United Centers for Spiritual Living and is a leader in the overall organization.
Education Requirement:
Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, or related field.
Experience and skills:
- Licensed Religious Science Practitioner or Minister preferred.
- Working familiarity with United Centers of Spiritual Living organizational model and the Global Heart Vision.
- Editorial experience in the publishing industry, including strong organizational skills.
- Understanding of and ability to supervise magazine production
- Strong interpersonal skills required for working effectively with writers, designers, printers, editorial staff, and other members of publishing team.
- Exceptional verbal and written and communication skills.
- Willingness to be flexible.
- Experience with budgeting and business aspects of a magazine.
- Ability to prioritize and manage ongoing projects.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Editorial:
- Plan the contents of each issue of the magazine, including generating feature ideas, assigning articles to writers, negotiating agreements, reviewing outlines and drafts of features, line editing, finding new writers.
- Work with Assistant Editor to identify writers for Daily Guides, advise on columns and end matter such as the Last Word, identify books and other materials for review, assess books for excerpt purposes.
- Organize structure and contents of each issue, including length of articles, editorial budget, author bios, letters to the editor, house ads, and photos.
- Work closely with the art director to determine appropriate design and art, provide contacts for photographs and follow up with art sources as required.
- Write contents page, contributors’ page, cover heads, feature subheads, callouts, sidebars, book bars.
- Proofread proofs and bluelines.
- Assist Assistant Editor in evaluating unsolicited manuscripts, responding to readers and potential author inquiries.
- Prepare and disseminate annual editorial schedule.
- Create magazine budget annually and monitor it monthly.
- Work closely with printer to monitor and manage promotional materials and schedule.
Book Publishing:
- Develop and oversee new Science of Mind book publishing program
- Develop and facilitate publishing partnership with Tarcher/Putnam
- Manage ongoing success of existing publishing imprints
- Evaluate manuscripts, edit and proofread galleys, work with designer to advise on layout and all elements. Work with artist/designer on cover concepts and to adhere to deadlines.
- Work closely with DeVorss & Company to monitor inventory and sales reports, facilitate reprints, and oversee book promotions.
Business:
- Work with management consultant to implement a variety of initiatives and campaigns
- Work with Operations Leader to implement development campaigns in magazine
- Create and monitor magazine’s operating budget
- Facilitate monthly Business Advisory Board and Editorial Reader Panels
